Roku Can Now Mirror Phone, PC and Tablet Screens

Screen mirroring—getting what’s on your phone, tablet or laptop to appear on your TV—is coming to Roku media players. On Thursday, the set-top-box company announced that it was testing mirroring in a beta for its Roku 3 and Roku Streaming Stick devices. Roku will bring mirroring to its lauded Roku TV sets in 2015.

The new feature—similar to one that Apple AAPL -0.28% TV and Google GOOGL +0.92% Chromecast users have enjoyed for some time now—is only guaranteed to work with a limited selection of the latest Android and Windows devices. Among the phones and tablets that Roku has confirmed compatible are products from HTC, Samsung 005930.SE +0.88%, Microsoft 'sMSFT +0.72% Surface and Google’s Nexus lineups. So far just one Dell laptop will.
Apple devices won’t work, because of a technology different, but many off-brand tablets, phones and laptops may—or may not. “If you have a device running Android 4.4.2 or higher or a Microsoft device running Windows 8.1, Screen Mirroring may work for you, and we encourage you to try it,” Roku said on its product support website. Roku is in the process of testing more devices to add to its confirmed list.
Setting up streaming on your compatible Roku device won’t require any extra apps or anything like that thanks to Roku’s use of the Miracast wireless mirroring standard.
“Once you turn on mirroring for your phone, tablet or laptop, you can pair with your compatible Roku player and whatever you see on your mobile device is exactly what will be displayed on your TV.” Roku said it expects to get the mirroring beta out to every Roku 3 and Streaming Stick in the next few weeks.
